Atelier Rosso began with one pair of hands. In 2010, Matteo Rosso — then a forty-four-year-old leatherworker from a small town outside Florence — boarded a ferry with two suitcases, a roll of Tuscan hide and his grandfather's awl, and moved to London in search of a quieter life and a louder city.

He rented a narrow shopfront on a side street in Bethnal Green — barely wider than his workbench — and hung a hand-painted sign that simply read Rosso · Pelletteria & Riparazioni. For the first four years he worked alone: re-stitching torn briefcases for City lawyers, rebuilding handles on heirloom handbags, and slowly, in the evenings, sketching the first bags he would one day call his own.

Word travelled the way it does in London — quietly, then all at once. By 2017 the little repair shop had a six-month waiting list, and a year later Matteo took on his first two apprentices. Today, at sixty, he still cuts every first sample himself from the bench at our flagship boutique on Redchurch Street, a short walk from where the original lavoratorio once stood. Every Atelier Rosso piece is finished with his initials, M.R., pressed quietly into the lining.
